Discover the top fitness trends shaping 2025—from smart tech to mental health and beyond.

The fitness world continues its digital evolution, with technology-based solutions taking center stage in the 2025 ACSM Worldwide Fitness Trends report. Published in ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal®, the annual survey gathered insights from over 2,000 fitness professionals, researchers, and clinicians across the globe. The top-ranked trend? Wearable Technology, followed closely by Mobile Exercise Apps and Exercise Programs for Older Adults.

These findings are more than just predictions—they offer valuable direction for fitness professionals, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts looking to stay ahead of the curve.

“Digital technologies are becoming more critical to the way we design, deliver and evaluate health and fitness services,” said A’Naja Newsome, PhD, ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist and co-author of the report. “Wearable devices, mobile apps and data-driven training methods will create avenues for reaching new clientele and elevating fitness experiences. The exercise professional will need to be innovative in their approach to using technology while increasing client adherence and autonomy.”

Mobile Exercise Apps have surged in popularity, climbing from #20 in 2023 to #2 in just two years. With over 850 million downloads by 370 million users in 2023, their accessibility and compatibility with wearable devices have clearly contributed to this leap.

Data-Driven Training Technology also made a notable move, jumping to #7 from #18 in 2024. This approach allows for real-time monitoring of metrics like sleep and heart rate variability, enabling customized programs even within group settings. It also improves safety, especially for clients with medical conditions.

“Clients desire instant feedback on their training so they can adjust or modify to maximize outcomes and reduce injury,” Newsome added. “We are seeing this in individualized programming and in group-based classes.”

Additional highlights from the 2025 report include the emergence of Influencer-led Fitness Programs (#12), newer entries like Hot and Cold Therapies (#20), and Exercise in Cancer Treatment (#29). Meanwhile, Worksite Health Promotion, once #2 in 2024, has dropped out of the top 20—possibly due to shifts in workplace dynamics and remote work trends.

1. Wearable Technology

Wearable devices like fitness trackers, smartwatches, and heart rate monitors remain the most influential trend. They provide real-time feedback on physical activity, sleep, stress, and health metrics, encouraging users to adopt healthier habits. While concerns around accuracy and data privacy remain, these tools are valuable for tracking progress and increasing motivation, especially when guided by exercise professionals.

2. Mobile Exercise Apps

Mobile fitness apps are now essential tools for both beginners and seasoned users. In 2023, there were 850 million fitness app downloads by nearly 370 million users. They offer flexible, customizable workout plans and often integrate with wearables to enhance the user experience. When used alongside professional guidance, apps can support evidence-based training and behavior change.

3. Fitness Programs for Older Adults

As the aging population grows, there’s a pressing need for tailored fitness programs that promote strength, mobility, and independence. Regular activity helps prevent chronic disease and reduce the risk of falls. Exercise professionals are encouraged to use tools like the Senior Fitness Test to support this key demographic with safe, effective programs.

4. Exercise for Weight Loss

Exercise remains a cornerstone in long-term weight loss strategies. A mix of resistance and aerobic training helps preserve muscle mass during caloric deficits or while using weight-loss medications. With obesity on the rise globally, professionals should prioritize approachable, enjoyable exercise plans that reduce stigma and improve adherence.

5. Traditional Strength Training

Foundational strength training using free weights and machines is critical for overall fitness. Despite public underuse, strength training is essential for maintaining muscle mass and preventing health decline. Professionals can help clients meet guidelines through progressive, personalized programs.

6. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

HIIT remains popular due to its efficiency and versatility. Alternating short bursts of intense effort with recovery periods, HIIT suits various fitness levels and can be adapted for health conditions. It requires minimal equipment and offers time-efficient results, though safety screening is essential.

7. Data-Driven Training Technology

Using real-time data—like heart rate variability and sleep patterns—allows for highly individualized programming. This approach supports safe and effective training, especially for special populations, and is gaining traction among experienced professionals. It also promotes better recovery and adaptation.

8. Exercise for Mental Health

Exercise is increasingly recognized for its impact on mental well-being. While there are no standardized guidelines yet, consistent physical activity can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. Professionals should consider clients’ preferences and barriers to help foster sustainable mental health benefits through movement.

9. Functional Fitness Training

This modality focuses on enhancing movement patterns used in daily life—like balance, coordination, and strength. It’s especially valuable for older adults and those in clinical settings, helping improve overall quality of life and reduce injury risk.

10. Health & Wellness Coaching

Wellness coaching blends behavioral science with fitness to foster long-term lifestyle change. Through techniques like motivational interviewing and deep empathy, coaches help clients navigate goals, build healthy habits, and sustain progress. This holistic approach is growing in demand across the industry.
